If you have never been to court before, your first appearance in Wayne County can feel intimidating. The courthouse, the procedures, the legal terminology — it is a lot to take in when you are already stressed about your case. As attorneys who practice in the Wayne County Courthouse nearly every day, we want to help you know what to expect so you can walk in feeling prepared and confident.
The Wayne County Courthouse is located on East Walnut Street in downtown Goldsboro — directly across the street from our law office. When you arrive, you will pass through a security checkpoint where your bags and personal items will be screened. Cell phones are generally permitted but must be silenced before entering any courtroom. Plan to arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before your scheduled court time to allow for parking and security. Public parking is available on surrounding streets and in nearby lots.
First impressions matter. Dress as you would for a job interview or a formal event. For men, slacks and a collared shirt are appropriate; a tie and jacket are better. For women, business attire or a conservative dress is recommended. Avoid shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, hats, and clothing with offensive language or imagery. Bring a valid photo ID, your court notice or citation, and any documents your attorney has asked you to have on hand. Leave weapons, pocketknives, and any prohibited items at home or in your vehicle.
Most first appearances in Wayne County District Court involve a large number of cases scheduled for the same session. When your case is called, you (or your attorney) will approach the bench and the judge will address the charges against you. Depending on the nature of your case, you may enter a plea, receive a court-appointed attorney if you qualify, or have your case continued to a later date. If you have hired an attorney, they will handle most of the speaking and guide you through the process. In many traffic and misdemeanor cases, your attorney can appear on your behalf so you do not have to miss work.
Having an attorney at your first court appearance makes a significant difference. Your attorney can negotiate with the prosecutor, request favorable conditions, and ensure your rights are protected from the very beginning. At HBHK Law, we prepare our clients before every court date so there are no surprises. We will explain what will happen, what to say (and what not to say), and what the likely next steps are. Because our office is directly across the street from the courthouse, we are uniquely positioned to provide convenient, attentive representation for Wayne County cases.
Your first court appearance is rarely the final one. In most cases, additional dates will be set for pretrial conferences, motions, or trial. Your attorney will keep you informed about each upcoming date and what preparation is needed. The most important thing you can do is show up on time, follow your attorney's guidance, and take the process seriously. If you have a court date approaching in Wayne County and do not yet have an attorney, call us at (919) 735-6420. We are right across the street and ready to help.
Tell us about your situation and we'll connect you with the right attorney. Most consultations happen within 24–48 hours of first contact.
